What is FTP? File Transfer Protocol helps you upload files to your WordPress site from a computer. Its easy-to-use interface offers functions like copy, upload, delete, rename, and edit files or folders.

What is an FTP server? To establish a connection using FTP, users need to have permission by providing credentials to the FTP server. There are three approaches to establish an FTP connection:

🟣 Using a Command-line FTP

Use the Command prompt in Windows or the Terminal in Mac/Linux.

🟣 Using a Web Browser

This method is more convenient to access large directories on the server.

🟣 Using an FTP Client

The most common practice. An FTP client provides more freedom, is easier to manage, and is more powerful than the command line and web browser. Many FTP clients are available, from free, open-source applications to premium options.

Here are some of the advantages of accessing a site using an FTP client:

πŸ‘‰ Install plugins and themes directly on WordPress.
πŸ‘‰ Manually deactivate plugins and themes when locked out of the WordPress dashboard.
πŸ‘‰ Upload media files in bulk.
πŸ‘‰ Make changes to core WordPress files such as .htaccess for customization and extra security measures.
πŸ‘‰ Diagnose and fix common errors on your site, such as compatibility issues and internal server errors.

Now you know what is FTP and how you can use it to manage your site.
