DriveHQ FTP Server Hosting Service Feature

FTP is extremely popular in transferring large files over the Internet, web publishing, FTP scripting and backup, EDI and many FTP-enabled devices such as scanners, printers, cameras and phone systems.

DriveHQ is one of the largest FTP and SFTP Hosting service providers, offering DriveHQ FTP for business and CameraFTP for IP security cameras. This video will only talk about DriveHQ FTP.

DriveHQ has all regular FTP and SFTP features. Businesses can migrate in-house FTP servers to our cloud FTP service instantly. Moreover, our FTP service is integrated with our Cloud IT service. It is very easy to create FTP accounts, set default folders and manage folder permissions with a web browser. You don’t need to worry about FTP server software, operating system, virtual machine or hardware. It is a completely ready-to-use FTP solution!

To get started, first, please sign up for a free account, or sign up for free business trial. After sign-up, you can immediately use the FTP hosting service.

Free service members can try the FTP features. It will expire after a few weeks. Paid Personal Members can use FTP and SFTP for limited personal purposes, but not for business. Business Members can use all FTP and SFTP features. Co-branded FTP domain can be supported for additional fees.

Now you have a DriveHQ account, let’s see how to connect to the FTP server. Dependent on your FTP client software, you probably need the following FTP information:

(1) FTP server name or IP address
(2) FTP protocol type
(3) FTP server port number
(4) FTP account username and password
(5) FTP mode
(6) FTP directory

For the FTP server, free members can only connect to: FTP.drivehq.com;
Paid members can connect to ftp.drivehq.com and proFTP.drivehq.com.
If you want to use SFTP, then you must connect to proFTP.drivehq.com.

For the FTP protocol type, you can choose from: (a) Plain FTP; (b) FTP over SSL Explicit, that is, FTPES; (c) FTP over SSL Implicit, that is, FTPS; (d) SFTP.

The plain FTP protocol will transfer data and login credentials unencrypted. Except for downloading public files with anonymous FTP, we don’t recommend it. Other FTP protocols are very secure.

For the FTP port, DriveHQ uses the default port numbers. For FTP and FTPES, it is 21; for FTPS, it is 990; for SFTP, it is 22.

Your FTP account username and password are the same as your DriveHQ username and password. If you need to share files with clients, usually you will create FTP accounts for them so that you don’t give them your own username and password. We will talk about it more later.

For the FTP mode, please use Passive if it is supported. The FTP Mode is not applicable to SFTP. If your FTP client only supports Active Mode FTP, such as the command-line FTP client on Windows, then your FTP connection is often blocked by your router or firewall. You need to use an FTP client that supports Passive Mode FTP.

For the FTP directory, it is usually optional. You can leave it empty, or enter a valid FTP folder path.

Now let’s take a look at two examples, the first example uses the command-line FTP client on Windows.

The second example uses a very popular free FTP client FileZilla. You can download it online.

These are just two examples. You can use any popular FTP client software, such as FileZilla, WinSCP, CuteFTP, WsFTP, SmartFTP, Fetch, CoreFTP and Cyberduck.

Windows File Explorer can also be used as an FTP client. Most web browsers also supports anonymous FTP for downloading public files.

In addition, you can use command-line FTP clients on Linux or Mac, FTP Backup software, Web Publishing software, FTP-enabled devices such as scanners, printers and phone systems.

For more detailed info, please visit: how to configure FileZilla and how to configure FTP apps for iOS/Android

When sharing files with multiple clients, each client needs to have a separate FTP account. You can create multiple sub-accounts with DriveHQ’s group admin feature.
You can then share different folders with different sub-accounts. Each sub-user can only access the folder shared with him.
