It introduces the manual allocation method which is suitable for assigning network parameters for few devices, or devices that need a fixed address such as a gateway router, printer, or server on the network.
It further describes the automatic allocation method which includes the reverse address resolution protocol, and the bootstrap protocol.
Finally, it introduces viewers to the dynamic allocation method through the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, which is defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force as an extension of BOOTP.
