All Wi-Fi is a type of WLAN, but not all WLANs are Wi-Fi. While the terms are often used interchangeably, Wi-Fi is just one type of WLAN, and WLAN is just one type of wireless network. A WLAN enables devices to connect and communicate wirelessly. Wi-Fi is a wireless protocol that uses 802.11 standards, and connects 802.11-enabled access points to 802.11 clients.
