The Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine is an easy way to bring networking devices into homes and businesses. Ubiquiti UniFi(r) Dream Machine (UDM) offers easy, powerful networking all in a single unit, powered by a speedy quad-core processor running at 1.7GHz.

In addition to its Unifi networking app, Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine has a Web interface that allows configuration of your router. If you love to fiddle around with your home network, there is nothing that gives you more options for customization than this UDM. Through a web interface, you get access to not just the UDM, but other supported Ubiquiti products.

You can manage your network via the Unifi Network app, or use your web browser to access it. You can use the Network app to control both the UDR itself, as well as the other supporting networking equipment. With a Dream Router, you have access and run all applications from within UniFi.

The Dream Router comes equipped with a single port for the Unifi, which allows connecting to the Dream Router and logging in to it using just one application. It allows direct connection of cameras, phones, and other Internet-using devices. Dream Router is also running Linux under the hood, allowing potential unsupported mods.

Ubiquiti is a popular name in the small business sector, but they also sell various routers for home use. The UniFi Dream Router is one of the more capable routers that can be found for home users, partly due to it being a entry business-grade unit. If you are in a rush, cannot wait for the UniFi Dream Router to come out, and want a simple but capable device, plus price is not an issue, then consider buying a UniFi Dream machine, because it is still a great choice.

It is not the best UDM, this seems to be more of a step towards getting a glimpse of UniFi Dream for entry-level consumers browsing the shelves of Best Buy. The UDM is the first Unifi product to work just fine as a home router, thanks to its friendlier design.

The UDM, with its built-in UniFi Controller, is the easiest way to bring 802.11ac 4×4 WiFi to your home or business. Here, a UniFi network controller runs on a Dream Machine (UDM). UDR works out of the box with no problems with at least two PoE devices, either as power supply or, if using a Unifi Access Point, the Network Control Center.

Like with UDMs, UDRs can accommodate several UniFi access points (up to 15) or extenders, to form a mesh WiFi system. For instance, on the networking side, the new routers can handle up to 15 access points, whereas UDMs can manage up to 40. After that, like the UDM, the UDR has all the features that you could imagine when it comes to networking, WiFi, and mesh setup.

The existing UDM is also only able to run one application, the UniFi Network application, while the UDR can run them all, from UniFi Network, UniFi Protect, UniFi Access, UniFi Talk, and others, but the biggest caveat is that because it is low RAM, the UDR can only run two of them all at a time. The existing UDM can be managed separately, but you will want to stick with either UXG Pro or a third-party router. The UDM-SE, powered by UniFi OS, gives you complete control over all of your UniFi devices, including access points, security cameras, talking phones, and access readers.

Referenced in the diagram above is the wide range of UniFi OS apps* supported by the UDM-PRO. Ubiquiti Controller Software will typically list each UniFi device running in your network. With a normal Unifi ecosystem, you would need one access point, one switch, and one security gateway in order to get to Ubiquitis Network Controller.
