Roman script for Kokborok in exams: TIPRA student body stages massive protest

Amid tight security, a massive gathering of TIPRA Indigenous Student’s Federation on Wednesday held a rally in Agartala demanding the use of Roman script for Kokborok language in Tripura’s examinations.

Members of the student body took out a procession from the Asthabal Maidan in the city and proceeded along the VIP road to reach the Governor’s house with the intention to submit a memorandum to Governor Satya Deo Narayan Arya with their demands. However, they were halted by police near the Gandhi statue adjacent to the circuit house.

Members of the student body squatted on the road and began sloganeering as a mark of protest.

“We urge the government to fulfill our demands. Our primary demand is to allow use of Roman script (for Kokborok). Students from CBSE have a lot of trouble with Bangla. We want the government to give students the option of choosing either Bangla or Roman script. So that they are able to write their exams with ease,” said a protester.

VO: Later in the day, a delegation of TISF members were able to proceed to the Raj Bhavan and hand over their memorandum.
