Ea Busted:
Steam Deck support for EA games has been unintentionally broken an undetermined amount of games on Steam Deck since ditching Origin.
Publisher EA is currently in the process of leaving its old launcher, Origin, behind. The new EA Play launcher requires a sign-in process, which won’t work on Steam Deck’s Linux distro, SteamOS.
What’s been reported, is that certain games will now load up a blank square, intended to be the EA Play sign-in window. We’ve verified this on certain titles.
With no support for Linux, and Proton, you’re not able to play previously ‘verified’ titles. This is because Proton, the compatibility layer that allows Linux to play Windows titles is unable to access it. Games that have previously been featured in advertisements for the Steam Deck now no longer work.
Deck UI:
Valve has announced a big update for Steam Big Picture mode, which the company introduced 10 years ago. As its name suggests, Valve designed Big Picture to make Steam easier to use on TVs and with a game controller. Subsequently, Valve released Steam Deck UI, arguably an updated version of Big Picture with superior game controller integration.
In a blog post, Valve has announced that Big Picture has effectively merged with Steam Deck UI. Currently restricted to Steam Client beta, the update allows people to enjoy Steam Deck UI without owning the Steam Deck itself. According to Valve, it has pushed the update to Steam Client beta so people can help it smooth out any rough edges with the user experience. Still, the company is confident that the updated UI is close enough to release it to public beta testers.
Unsurprisingly, the new Big Picture mode operates like Steam Deck UI, with a revised home screen layout and a new universal search. Additionally, Valve has integrated a new controller configurator, an updated in-game overlay, as well as new system and quick-access menus. Once you have opted into the Steam Client beta, you can trigger the new Big Picture mode by adding ‘-gamepadui to your Steam launch shortcut.
