Linux Mint: Debian Based vs. Ubuntu Based ("Quo Vadis?")

“Quo Vadis” (lat. = “where are you going?”) is my question to Linux Mint. While the mainline Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, there is a hidden sibling, LMDE, based on Debian. Why the unequal treatment? Why the excuses? I discuss the confusion around Mint and its two faces.
