Automation Testing for Expo React Native Apps with Jest and React Native Testing Library

Hi everyone!

Today I’m showing you how to automate the testing of your Expo react native apps using Jest and React Native Testing Library. We will also use the expo-jest npm package.

I will show you how to mock api calls, test functions were called, get components by test id, take snapshots and more! I will also show you a great plugin for Visual Studio Code that will run your tests as you make changes. This is great for test driven development (TDD) and greatly improves dev experience. It also makes it super easy to debug your tests.

Finally, I will also touch on folder structure options for tests.

My code for this is available on GitHub:

And a blog will be released in the coming days over on my website:

// ABOUT ME
My name is Chelsea and I started studying software engineering in 2010. I have been working commercially full time since 2014 and have been in various positions from graduate developer to tech lead to solution architect.
I’m a full stack developer with a lot of experience in C# and Javascript but my passion is for mobile development; specifically native iOS development and cross platform using React Native.

I always have many things on the go and am always trying out a new side hustle and failing at it; perhaps you can learn from my mistakes!
