๐ŸŸฃ What Is a CDN?

CDN stands for Content Delivery Network and is a group of servers spread across different locations. This network offers several points of presence outside of the origin server, which helps websites better manage their traffic by handling user requests faster and providing a better user experience.

๐ŸŸฃ What Is an Origin Server?

An origin server is a computer that hosts your original web files. Without a CDN, visitors will need to request and receive information directly from your siteโ€™s server. The farther the distance between the end-user and an origin server, the longer the user will have to wait for the page to load.

๐ŸŸฃ What Is a CDN Edge Server?

An edge server is a computer that can cache content retrieved from an origin server. They are located in physical data centers spread worldwide โ€“ the points of presence. Users can retrieve data from a physically closer CDN edge server, which is especially helpful when there is a sudden spike in your websiteโ€™s traffic.

๐ŸŸฃ How Does a CDN Work?

When a user requests to access your website, your CDN will retrieve data from the origin server. Then, the CDN will copy this data and place it in the nearest edge server. This data will be cached and reused for future requests.

Using a CDN can benefit your website by:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Reducing bandwidth consumption.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Improving the websiteโ€™s performance.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Strengthening security.
