The RX 7900XTX Still SUCKS for VR! BUT Radeon RX 6000 GPU's are Looking GOOD!!!

It’s been 5 months since the Radeon RX 7900XTX launched and to this day it still SUCKS for VR. For this video I spent the better part of a week messing around with the 7900XTX trying out some different things I found online. In my original VR performance review I found the 7900XTX was defaulting to h.264 encoding when using it with my Oculus (Meta) Quest 2. The thing is AMD’s h.264 encoder is pretty trash compared to Nvidia’s so the graphics in the headset end up looking pretty blurry. Thanks to some very ingenuitive people I found a way to force the Oculus app to use h.265 rather than h.2645 by changing a Windows registry entry. Changing the registry entry worked but things did not go the way I was expecting them to. I tried the 7900XTX with both a Link cable and with AirLink and when using AirLink ran into another problem where the right side of my field of view was being warped or squeezed in which sent me on another mission to find a fix for that and once again thanks to the efforts of others I found a fix for that. After all slogging through all the issues with the 7900XTX I wanted to check several of my older AMD Radeon 6000 GPU’s (namely the 6650XT, 6700XT and 6950XT) and see what kind of issues, if any they had when running VR with the Quest 2? After all the bad news and disappointment with the 7900XTX I was very happy to find things with the 6000 series GPU’s is much different and WAAAY better!

If you’d like to try forcing your Oculus app & AirLink to run h.265 encoding, here’s a link to the Reddit post where I found the commands to run – https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/s2n4mb/how_to_use_hevc_h265_on_air_link/
