Deploying PostgreSQL on Kubernetes Made Easy ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ˜ | Tutorial with Petroni & Spilo | Josh Burkus

#PostgreSQL #Kubernetes #Petroni #Spilo #RedHat #Database #Deployment #HighAvailability #KubernetesNative #Tutorial #Replication #KubernetesOperator

๐Ÿ‘‹ Welcome everybody! In this video, we have Josh Burkus from Red Hat, who will be discussing how to deploy PostgreSQL on Kubernetes. Josh’s goal is to make deploying PostgreSQL, whether on your internal or public cloud, as simple and boring as possible.

๐Ÿค” So, what does Josh mean by “boring”? Well, according to a recent article by Matt Asay, PostgreSQL is considered one of the “hot hip” databases to use with new technologies, despite being 27 years old. And why is that? Because PostgreSQL is reliable and doesn’t require much thought. You deploy PostgreSQL, save your data to it, and it says your data is saved. You don’t have to worry about sharding strategies or other complex scaling issues.

๐Ÿ’ช But, as Josh points out, there is still one thing that makes deploying PostgreSQL not so boring: the setup process. That’s where Kubernetes comes in. In this video, Josh will explain the Petroni project and how it’s integrated with Kubernetes. He’ll also provide a demo of the Kubernetes-native version of Petroni, as well as the Zalando PostgreSQL operator.

๐Ÿค“ For those who are unfamiliar, PostgreSQL is a database that has been around since the 80s and continues to add new features. Petroni, on the other hand, is a high-availability daemon service that runs inside a container. It automates failover and replication for your PostgreSQL cluster and provides a management API.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Josh’s team designed Petroni with three goals in mind: simplicity, usability, and availability. They wanted to simplify PostgreSQL for the majority of users who see it as one endpoint rather than a complex constellation of services. They also wanted to make deploying and managing PostgreSQL on Kubernetes as simple as possible. And, of course, they wanted to ensure that the service was highly available.

๐Ÿ™Œ So, if you’re interested in learning how to deploy PostgreSQL on Kubernetes, this video is definitely for you! Josh will explain everything you need to know about Petroni and how it can simplify your PostgreSQL deployment process. So, sit back, relax, and let’s make deploying PostgreSQL boring together!
Database systems remain the last frontier for Kubernetes, and at the Patroni Project we’re working on conquering it. Having fully automated PostgreSQL clusters using Patroni, the project is now working on making Patroni more “Kubernetes native”, so that SQL databases can be seen simply as a PostgreSQL resource.

In this talk, we will explain and demonstrate the current projects integrating Patroni PostgreSQL with Kubernetes, including:

* Patroni Operator, using the CoreOS Operator pattern
* Kube-native Patroni, which uses the Kubernetes controller instead of its own management

These works in progress will both acquaint attendees with tools they can use for their own high-availability database architectures, and explore some areas where Kubernetes could improve to support database systems better.
