Era of the Handheld PC

I never properly reviewed or talked about the Steam Deck after I first got it, but it’s something I’ve been using on and off this past year and this video covers my general thoughts about it, the competition and the future of handheld PCs.

Another point being that handheld gaming is DIFFERENT to desktop gaming. You game at 40 FPS, you choose settings the handheld can manage easily, and you get a great experience out of it. It’s not one of those things that benefits from ultra settings, high resolutions and high refresh rates. That stuff actively works against a handheld experience… for now. But it looks good on paper.

With hindsight, it’s surprising it’s only just reached the point that gaming can be done in handheld form. Turns out there’s more than just processing power required to make it a desirable experience!

Handheld PCs may been around in some form or another for years, but the Steam Deck finally managed to do it with no particularly troublesome downsides, and now it’s just onwards and upwards from here. Especially once Windows stops being bad.
