About this video: Using a domain name for your Minecraft server is a great way to not only make the server easier to access but also make it seem more professional to players. The ability to say ‘Join the server with domain.com’ as the IP is much better than saying ‘Let me send you the numbers for the IP.’ It’s easier to remember and a great way to improve your Minecraft server. So, without anymore delay, let’s go over how to use a website address for your Minecraft server IP.

First things first, you will need to purchase a domain name. We recommend using Name.com for this simply because we enjoy using them ourselves. However, any domain provider will allow you to do this without any issues.

When you purchase your domain, you will want to find where you need to go to edit DNS on it. From name.com this can be found by clicking the domain on the site and clicking ‘Manage DNS Records’.

Once you are there, you want to start off by setting up an A Record. For host, this can be anything you want. Just know that what ever you put here can’t be used to join your server. I would recommend something like ‘server. For the Answer, this is the IP address of your server. Note that it isn’t the port just the IP address. For TLL, leave it default.

From there, let’s add an SRV Record. In this, use _minecraft as the service. TCP is the protocol, and the port is the port for your Minecraft server. For example, it could 25565. The target is what you added as the A Record. This could be server.domain.com or whatever is in the A Record you created. TTL can be left default and Priority can be 0.

By default, this will be for your main domain. Meaning people can join your server by typing in just your main domain as the IP address.

If you want to use a subdomain like Play.YourDomain.com, you need to edit the SRV record and add the subdomain after TCP. For example, _minecraft._tcp.play.yourdomain.com would allow people to join your server using Play.YourDomain.com. You can add in multiple sub-domains if you want.

One more thing to note is that DNS is notoriously slow, and it can take up to four hours to rollout across the internet. This is normal, so don’t be alarmed if things don’t work right away.

With that being said, you now know how to use a domain name as your Minecraft server’s IP address. If you have any questions about getting a domain name for your Minecraft server, let us know in the comments.
