Webmaster is a fairly obscure adventure game game developed by Ijsfontein, the same studio that made Masters of the Elements. It was originally developed and released in 1999, and later localized and published in North America by Tivola in 2000. Webmaster can best be described as an “internet-themed” game. It doesnt’ really teach players about the internet and how it works, but rather uses the internet as a setting for its abstract world.

The primary puzzle-solving mechanics in Webmaster are cards and message boards. The whole idea of the game is to search around the world, exploring and playing minigames in order to collect cards. Then you need to take these cards to message boards in order to ask the “subterranians” what they are used for. The subterranians give you clues and hints on how cards can be used. Once you discover which cards are important to the Hacker, you take them to the firewall to unlock the next area of the game. There are four firewalls, and solving all of them completes the game.

In order to increase replay value, there are three difficult levels which affect the speed of the minigames, and all of the card locations and combinations are randomized on each new game.
