Formulas in SharePoint Lists: LEFT & RIGHT

This tutorial will show you how to create a calculated column in a SharePoint Online list that uses the LEFT and RIGHT formula to extract data from another column. Specifically, this tutorial will show you how to create a column in SharePoint List that extracts data from a string column, integer column, and a data-time column. Using the LEFT and RIGHT formulas in a SharePoint list is exactly the same as using the formulas in Microsoft Excel.

For reference the formulas are:
LEFT(text,num_chars)
