Asus ROG Ally vs Valve Steam Deck – Which hardcore handheld comes out on top?

This is the Asus ROG Ally. It’s a new handheld console from Asus’ Republic of Gamers brand and a direct competitor to the Valve Steam Deck.

The Ally houses an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU which is more powerful than the custom chip in the Steam Deck, and it has some other advantages too.

The 7in display has a superior resolution of 1080p and twice the refresh rate at 120Hz. In addition to Steam, its Windows 11 OS enables access to game services like Xbox Game Pass, the Epic Games Launcher and Ubisoft Connect.

Punchy performance, gorgeous visuals and breadth of game choice come at a price, however. The Ally costs £699 – £130 more than the top-spec Steam Deck. Will it be worth the extra outlay?
