It used to be that VMware Tools was tied to the version of ESXi installed on a host. However, with recent VMware Tools versions, VMware Tools is now decoupled with the version of ESXi installed on a host and Tools can easily be updated! You no longer need to update ESXi to get the latest features in VMware Tools!
