This video is all about unboxing of Samsung 850 EVO 250GB mSATA SSD. I have explained why we can’t install mSATA SSD directly into laptops and expect computer to boot from it.

mSATA interface was developed at a time when SSDs were very costly. So the engineers designed this interface in a way to be used as a cache memory to speed up computer’s performance while working with the hard disks. And laptop prior to 2015 had this mSATA interface.

But now due to the price drop of Solid State Drives we can get a high capacity SSD and would want to use it to run operating system on it. But installing this in old laptops is a bit difficult because laptops were not designed in a way to boot up from mSATA SSDs and instead only the primary hard disk is searched for bootable records.

It will work fine if you have only mSATA SSD in your laptop. But if you put the hard disk, laptop will not boot from mSATA SSD. This is kind of a bad news, because we don’t want to ditch those hard disks owing to their large storage at cheap price.

And we want to keep the performance of SSD as well. So, there are many ways to do this but a naive user cannot do them. So, I am showing the easiest way which anyone can follow without any technical background.

My model is HP Envy TouchSmart 15-J109TX.

In this video, I have explained the process of disassembly of HP Envy laptop and installation of mSATA SSD. Disassembly is pretty simple and easy in HP Envy laptops. And it is as easy to install mSATA SSD as it is to install RAM.

P.S.: Although, it is very easy to go for the disassembly and installation of SSD in laptop on your own, but if you think you can’t do it or might commit mistakes, then please seek the help of a professional.

Install Windows on SSD. It may sound easy and it is actually easy. After installing mSATA SSD, make necessary changes in BIOS and just boot from the USB.

Delete all the partitions of your hard disk. They will combine to form one chunk of unallocated space. Install Windows on SSD and let Windows do its thing. After Setup finishes and reboots the computer, take out the USB.

Your computer will not boot and instead show an error that there are no Bootabe device or something like that. This is because your hard disk contains no operating system (you formatted it) and computer checks only the primary hard disk for operating system even though an operating system is installed on SSD.

Turn off the computer. Take out the hard disk and power on. Your computer will boot into SSD this time and you can finish the Set-up of windows.

P.S.: Make sure to back up all your data before formatting the hard disk. Also, if your computer came with Windows installed then the serial-key is stored in BIOS. So, you don’t have to worry about that. Windows will be activated automatically.

Install Windows on hard-disk and setting up boot

Turn off the computer and install the hard-disk drive back into the computer. Boot into Windows Installation USB and install windows on hard-disk this time. Leave all the partitions of SSD as they are.

After reboot take out the USB device and Finish installation.

Make necessary changes to the boot order as shown in video and your computer will boot from SSD while hard disk is free to use. Format your hard-disk and use it as storage.

Speed Comparison Samsung EVO 250 GB mSATA SSD vs Seagate 1 TB Hybrid Hard Disk

I have compared the performance of Seagate 1TB Hybrid Hard Disk (5200 RPM) and Samsung 850 EVO 250GB mSATA SSD. Windows work like a charm now. All those heavy software like Eclipse, Visual Studio etc., open up in a blink now.

Disclaimer: I claim no responsibility in case the above method didn’t work for you. Please google out other methods in that case.
Also, the video was made in October 2017 and ever since a lot of updates have been rolled out to the operating system and BIOS. So, the system might behave differently.
