DCS World Intel ARC A770 GPU review

I recently built a computer around the Intel ARC A770 video card. There is a paucity of information on this GPU and none that I could find with DCS World. So…

The video says it all. After much wringing of DCS controls and playing with Intel’s ARC Control setting, here is what I discovered.

– Use the A770 as it is. DCS does not like overclocking, VSync, or filtering by this video card. You are not going to need it. If you do need it, this might not be the card for you. That said, I played with all the settings before coming to this conclusion. Have at it.

– Stripping the scenery and settings down to bare minimums did little for frame rate. I suspect this is due to the 16GB VRAM on the card.

– Gamma is gouge. A setting below 2.6 makes shadows too dark. Your mileage may vary.

– Using MSI Afterburner, Riva Tuner, and ARC’s own management tools found temperatures on the card do not pass 70C.

– At times VRAM use will get above 13GB, so having the extra memory is great. Also, problems seem to pop up only when the GPU gets tasked above 98%. This last item happens, but is only a true problem when one has changed settings on the card. See below.

– I had a bout with the dreaded “black boxes” others have described. Mine would cover most of the screen, typically when I was looking the direction of concentrations of objects, the target area inbound for instance. Resetting the A770 to stock solved this, RESULTING in better frame rates at higher quality. Who knew?

***Side note***
I am a novice when it comes to DCS, but have a bit of experience in the air getting shot at. The mission in this video is based on the first hour of the Yom Kippur War. I took the time to research the actual units, tactics, and battles involved. Israel’s victory was a miracle, but to their opponent’s (Syria and Egypt) credit, they completely fooled Israeli Intelligence and came within an hour of actually winning. Incredible pride can be had for both sides in this conflict.

If there is any interest in this mission being available via DCS, comment below.

Shout out to Grim Reapers, Growling Sidewinder, and others who seem to have it wired when it comes to DCS.

Thank you for watching, and reading. Have a superb day.
