For at least two solid weeks there’s a complete closure of the WCML north of Carlisle due to major realignment and other track works at Carstairs, where the WCML splits for Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Whilst both TPE and Avanti are terminating trains at Carlisle and running Rail Replacement buses, Avanti are running a token service from Glasgow to Carlisle via Dumfries using Class 221 Super Voyagers – at least when they don’t get cancelled (two return runs being cancelled on this day). ScotRail meanwhile is running its usual services from Carlisle to Dumfries and Glasgow – unavailable to Avanti and TPE passengers if they don’t have the appropriate tickets!

TransPennine managed to block Platform 3 for over 5 hours today as well as cancelling other morning trains. However the signallers and platform staff handled the situation well with few delays to the passenger trains.

Meanwhile the freight companies were running some intermodals via Dumfries with one engineers train from and to Edinburgh running via Newcastle.

Some interesting wagons and machinery was taken down the WCML to Crewe Basford Hall.
