Still here? Excellent. In the time since Project Killswitch was announced, you may have wondered what happened to the $3 reservations we collected from people. Well, that’s a difficult question to answer. Perhaps it would be most accurate to say we took the money and ran.
…right over to our plastic injection molding facility, where we got to work on tooling – that is, building the industrial mold that we’ll use to mass produce Project Killswitch.
Tooling is never easy, but it was especially challenging this time. See, with Project Killswitch, we had a number of non-negotiable product attributes:

Premium feel
Performant passive heat dissipation
No warping or flimsiness
Full coverage
Unlike clip-on plastic or single-shot silicone cases in the market, we achieved the first four points using our proprietary high-performance polyurethane, paired with a rigid polycarbonate skeleton.
It’s the fifth point that presented a challenge. In order to produce an uninterrupted part that covered both the front and back of the Steam Deck (without using stretch-prone, lint-collecting, flimsy silicone), we had to overcome a pretty dramatic undercut.
You probably have absolutely no idea what undercut means. That’s why we came prepared with a highly relatable, not-at-all strange metaphor.
Imagine you had a tube full of melted cheese. Next, imagine you emptied that entire tube into your mouth. Rather than swallowing the cheese, you decide to let it sit in your mouth and harden. Why are you doing this? We don’t know. Let’s just say you want a brick of cheese that’s perfectly molded to the contours of your mouth – a very normal thing to want.
