Iran still has U.S. F-14 Tomcats, because the US and Iran used to be allies. Some six years before the release of Top Gun, five Iraqi Mi-25 helicopter gunships attacked Iranian border posts In early September of 1980s. The Iranian Air Force, oh, sorry, I mean the Iranian Air Force responded with two F-14 Tomcats. Just a few minutes after they went into air, one of the F-14s acquired the Iraqi helicopters on radar, and immediately dived toward them, to get the first kills of the round, but they didn’t know what was going to happen! Pilot locked one of the Iraqi gunships and fired AIM-9P sidewinder, but sidewinder lost the lock-on and hit the ground. Second missile faced the same failure, and for third turn the Iranian pilot decided to use F-14’s M61A1 vulcan cannon, and fired 400 rounds against all the rules of engagement, and turned the helicopter into a ball of fire. Iranian F-14s were not armed with Aim-54s due to shortage because the US discontinued the order.
