A virtual LAN, or VLAN, groups devices together on separate local area networks, or LANs. VLANs are typically implemented in organizations with busy networks and lots of devices that can’t all operate on one single network. VLANs use logical connections — not physical hardware — to separate and group devices like computers, printers, and even mobile devices.

Because a VLAN gives specific groups of devices their own network, it reduces traffic, keeps the network separate from other LANs nearby, and eases administration.
