SteamOS 3.0 Official Release
Valve has been working on this for a long time so naturally there are ways to get SteamOS 3 working on your gaming PC, but I think most people are waiting for the official release from Valve
Understand why it’s taking so long. There’s a lot of different hardware that needs to be supported. Even outside of NVIDIA and AMD cards, each manufacturer has tons of them and I can imagine figuring out which ones to support is a headache of its own.
But the experience is so good on the Steam Deck that I would love to see this happen sooner rather than later.
I’ve been playing Death Stranding on both my TV and on my Steam Deck and thanks to the latest update to the beta version of desktop Steam, you can finally boot into Steam normally and enter the Steam OS 3.0 big picture mode when you click the big picture button instead of straight up booting into it as your only option.
It made playing the game on my TV not feel like a downgrade from an ease of use perspective so I can’t wait to pair that up with the excellent desktop interface that the Steam Deck has.
The one issue with the PC side of things that makes me gravitate towards my Steam Deck though is that I also love to use my Sony XM5’s with this game because the sound effects and music are incredible, and getting the headphone jack on the DualSense working is a mess.
On top of that, the alternative, connecting them to my PC with bluetooth doesn’t work because there’s audio latency.
So plugging them right into the Steam Deck and getting that crystal clear audio makes me appreciate that device so much more.
There’s also the work that Valve does to have games pre-cache their shaders and it legitimately does fix micro stutter in a lot of the games I have problems with on my $3500 dollar gaming laptop so that’s a huge reason why I’ll be installing SteamOS 3 on a partition as soon as it’s available.
As for when it’ll be available? Who knows. That’s the frustrating thing here. We don’t even really have hints outside of an update from October 27th when a person in the Steam Deck HQ Discord named Gecked was digging through files and found a SteamOS Media Creation tool in Valve’s repos.
But the fact that that exists is making me at least a little hopeful that we won’t have to wait TOO LONG to get the official release.
Windows Dual Booting
Windows on the Steam Deck is always a testy topic but at this point I think it’s a necessity for some gamers… like me.
Look, for 99% of the games I play SteamOS is a-okay but for games like Destiny 2, Fortnite, and Dead by Daylight, it just doesn’t work.
I’m not going to play the blame game even though at this point it’s pretty clear that all Bungie, Epic and Behaviour have to do is add a specific anti-cheat file, I’m just going to say that our only real option right now is to either put Windows on a micro SD card, wipe our Steam Deck and make it Windows-only or go through the unofficial methods of dual booting.
And to me personally, none of those are good enough compared to an official way to install both operating systems and the best thing is, we know that this it’s coming.
The downside is we don’t know when.
Just like with the official release of SteamOS, this is one of the last big steps Valve has to take with the Steam Deck to make it the ultimate gaming platform and with the list of big features people are asking for getting shorter and shorter by the week, I feel like 2023 is when it’s actually going to happen.
