The first question to answer, is what exactly is a VPS
Well VPS is just an abbreviation for virtual private server, and to explain what advantages you get from having one, lets first take a typical trader called Steve.
Now Steve has set up a trading room in his home in Manchester, and bought a powerful desktop PC , from which he does all his trading, issuing trades and receiving the fills.
Those trades , are sent from his direct from his PC in Manchester to the London based forex server his trading software is connected to.
However because of the distance between his home in Manchester, and the London based forex server, some 250 miles, sieves trades take about 7 milliseconds to get to his forex brokers server, by which time the prices his expert advisor identified, running in his trading software, have gone, as a result he is getting bad fills.
Steve is also is having to keep his PC on all day and night, deal with the frequent internet outages he gets, backup his PC in case of any problems, and if he were to run any other software, like excel on his PC ,that will just slow down his trading software more, resulting in even worse fills. And even worse if an issue with his connectivity or power were to happen while he was sleeping, his expert advisor might be offline for hours.
Now to show the advantages Steve can get , from having a VPS , we will take another trader called john.
Now john just has set up trading room at his home, in Liverpool. However, he has bought only a very basic, cheap PC to use to read emails and other day to day internet based activities.
Again he is some 250 miles from his forex provers server.
However, he has rented a VPS which he has based in London near to his forex broker, on which he is running all his trading.
As a result it is close to his forex providers server, so the trades it issues, are getting there in just 1 millisecond, and so he getting better fills than steve can, even though steve has a more powerful machine at home.
john has no problems to deal with if his local internet or even electricity, goes out at home, as his VPS will continue to run in its london based datacenter.
He can turn his home PC off, run YouTube videos, or open programs like email or excel on it, and his trading will be completely unaffected.
Although I have focused in this video , on forex trading, everything I am saying also applies to share trading, even the choice of forex VPS provider, so although john is only dabbling in share trading at the moment, he is also using his VPS for that, again freeing up his home PC for day to day use.
And as a final added bonus, unlike johns home PC, because his VPS is only being used just for trading, rather than receiving emails, browsing the web, and general day to day use, it is far less likely to be impacted by viruses, malware or ransomware.
And because johns trading software is not on his PC at home, which is behind a router, it means that when he is at work, or even thousands of miles away on holiday, he can connect to his VPS from his mobile phone, allowing him the option to monitor or even control his VPS trading.
