During the production of Laravel Origins, we asked the cast about their thoughts on the current state of PHP and how they feel when other programmers claim that PHP is dead.

This video features Jeffrey Way, Matt Stauffer, Freek Van der Herten, Erika Heidi, Diana Scharf, Jess Archer, Christoph Rumpel, Adam Wathan, Nuno Maduro, Dries Vints and Eric L. Barnes.

🤡 Is PHP dead in 2022?
🤡 Is PHP dead or alive?
🤡 Is PHP dead yet?
🤡 Is PHP still relevant?
🤡 Is PHP used anymore?

Do a google search for “Is PHP dead” and you’ll find thousands of articles and videos debating whether or not PHP is still a viable option for building modern web applications and / or if becoming a PHP developer is still a good career choice. Alternatively, spend 20 minutes on tech twitter and you’ll likely come across some form of PHP bashing.

Created by Rasmus Lerdorf back in 1995, a time when cyber cafés were all the craze and the internet basically meant “electronic mail”, PHP is, for lack of a better word, old. And according to those we interviewed, this is ultimately why PHP gets such a bad rap.

“It doesn’t have the hot new thing effect” – Jeffrey Way
“I think it has a bad reputation because of its past. Pre-composer days, it didn’t have a good dependency manager and the language itself was stale.” – Freek Van der Herten
“There are people who used it 20 years ago, and people who never used it, and together they like to make jokes about PHP.” – Erika Heidi
“They look at other new languages through the 2022 scope, but they still look at PHP through the 2010 scope.” – Jess Archer

Additionally, due to it being a very approachable language for beginners, there’s a feeling amongst the interviewees that the amount of beginner-level websites on the internet built in PHP has led to people believing that you can’t build sophisticated or complex applications on the web using PHP.

In this video, the cast of Laravel Origins reflect on PHP’s controversial past, bust the myth that PHP is a dead programming language and talk about the ways in which PHP has changed over the last 15-20 years.

0:00 PHP isn’t what it was 15 years ago
3:07 Modern PHP has a lot going for it
4:30 So, PHP is still a thing?
5:30 PHP’s evolution over the last decade
9:35 PHP bashing is boring
