Coming out shortly after Debian 11 was the release of Debian Edu 11 based on the Debian 11 Bullseye. Check out the news and find out where to download the distro.

Debian Edu/Skolelinux is the Debian Pure Blend distribution of Debian-edu. Its aim is to provide a ready-to-use localized environment, adapted for schools and universities. The main goals of Skolelinux are localization and ease of system administration.

The ready-to-use environment comes with 75 apps designed for schools, as well as 17 network services pre-configured for a school environment. Also, the simple three-question installation requires minimal technical knowledge.

Skolelinux is Debian, which means, among other things, that there are no license costs or worries, and that software updating and maintenance can be done over the Internet with the power of Debian’s apt-get.

Now, the Debian Project today announced the release and general availability of the Debian Edu (aka Skolelinux) 11 “Bullseye” operating system as a complete Linux solution for schools.

What’s New in Debian Edu 11

Based on the recently released Debian 11 Bullseye operating system series, the Debian Edu 11 Bullseye has arrived to provide a ready-to-use environment for setting up a complete and fully capable school network.
New features in Debian Edu 11 include support for LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) diskless workstations and thin clients with support for X2Go technology, iPXE network boot support for LTSP compliance, support for graphical iPXE installations as well as server Standalone Samba with SMB2/SMB3 Support, support.

In addition, this release introduces a new tool to configure freeRADIUS with support for EAP-TTLS/PAP and PEAP-MSCHAPV2 methods, improves the tool used to configure a new system with a minimal profile as a dedicated gateway and makes DuckDuckGo the default provider. search for Firefox ESR and Chromium browsers.

According to the Debian Project:

“The teachers themselves or their technical support can implement a complete multi-user and multi-user study environment in just a few days. Debian Edu comes with hundreds of apps pre-installed, and you can always add more Debian packages.”

Of course, Debian Edu 11 is using all the GNU/Linux technologies included in the Debian Bullseye series, such as the Linux 5.10 LTS kernel series, GCC 10.2 system compiler, GNU C 2.31 library implementation of the C standard library, LLVM 11.0.1 compiler and many others.

Debian Edu 11 does not come with a pre-installed desktop environment, despite the fact that previous versions offer a dedicated Xfce image, but you can choose from the many desktop environments supported by Debian, including KDE Plasma, GNOME , Xfce, LXQt, LXDE, Cinnamon and MATE.

Desktop environments contain more than 70 education-oriented software, and you can install even more from the Debian archives.
