In December of 2015, a non-profit organization called OpenAI was established with the goal of developing safe artificial general intelligence. The entity was co-created by Elon Musk, along with other wealthy donors such as Reed Hoffman, who pledged a billion dollars to support the cause. The ambition was to compete with other tech giants in the race for developing advanced AI technology.

Fast forward to February of 2018, and Elon Musk expressed his dissatisfaction with the way OpenAI was progressing. According to him, Google was racing ahead and steamrolling over OpenAI. Musk proposed taking over the organization to steer it in the right direction, but other members of OpenAI were against the idea, and he ultimately stepped down from the organization. The public announcement cited a conflict of interest at Tesla, the other company Musk runs, which was developing its own AI. The announcement stated that he would continue to fund OpenAI, but this did not materialize. Musk donated a hundred million dollars and left OpenAI to look for other sources of funds.

In 2019, OpenAI went private to create a for-profit entity and brought on new investors, including Microsoft, which pledged a billion dollars. This strategic partnership provided OpenAI with the necessary infrastructure and computing power to train and run massive AI models.

Fast forward to November of 2022, and OpenAI gained popularity with the public due to its highly advanced ChatGPT technology. However, Elon Musk criticized OpenAI in a series of tweets, stating that the organization had access to Twitter’s database and that he needed to understand more about the governance structure and revenue plans going forward. He also pointed out that OpenAI was no longer an open-source, non-profit organization.
