Horse Trails of America, HTA.horse: Slide Lake in Glacier National Park, Montana by William Dean

A horseback ride on the Otatso Creek Trail to Slide Lake in Glacier National Park, Montana. Slide Lake is in the often “Forgotten” northeast corner of Glacier National Park which is still relatively undeveloped. Slide Lake lies west-southwest of Chief Mountain which is the most sacred ground of all to the native Blackfeet. The ride was 14.6 miles with most of it on Blackfeet Reservation land before crossing the park boundary. The trail passes the restored Otatso Creek Patrol Station which was built by the NPS in 1936. There’s a beautiful smaller lake just before Slide Lake so don’t be fooled by stopping before the bigger lake! Both lakes were formed by huge rocky landslides which have tumbled off the north face of Yellow Mountain, damming the creek. It’s a beautiful ride that offers a much wilder experience than many of the more popular trails. Thanks to William Dean for this amazing video.
