Russia said its forces shot down a Ukrainian Su-25 fighter jet in the Donetsk region over the past day. Moscow also said that its troops eliminated 75 Ukrainian soldiers in the Kupyansk area over the past day. Konashenkov added that Russian forces also destroyed a Ukrainian ammunition depot in the area. Ukraine’s counteroffensive effort to reach the key southeastern city of Melitopol is likely to fail, according to US intelligence. Sources familiar with a classified forecast told the Washington Post that Ukrainian troops will probably remain “several miles outside of the city”. Belarus claimed that it protects Russia from a possible NATO strike, according to state news agency Belta. Belarus Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin called protecting Russia “the most important work” for the country. Nearly 500,000 Ukrainian and Russian troops have been killed or injured since Feb. 2022, as per a New York Times report.
