Installing a graphics card also known as a GPU isn’t very difficult to do. And in this video I’ll show you how to take out your old graphics card and install a new one like the GeForce RTX 2070 Super. I never mess around with the insides of my computer so this is the first time I’m doing this. And even though I don’t have experience with PC components, I was able to do install a new graphics card pretty easily!

I also bought an anti-static band just for this project so I can work inside my computer safely so be sure to pick up one before starting. The computer I’m upgrading is the iBuyPower Element 9260 gaming PC which already has a good graphics card in it (GeForce 1660 Ti). But we needed a new one to experience ray tracing in some games.

First thing to do is unplug everything including the power cable. After that press the power button just to eliminate any extra electricity still lingering in the computer. At this point remove the side panel. And before unplugging anything inside the computer, check to make sure you have the needed power cables inside your computer. The GeForce RTX 2070 Super requires an 8 pin and 6 pin power cable which fortunately my power supply has.

My existing GTX card is held in by a couple of retaining screws. First I’ll unplug the power cable to the card. And with a Philips screw driver I can start removing the retaining screws. For this part it really helps to have a magnetic screwdriver but if not just make sure the screws don’t fall into the computer case when they come out.

Once the screws are out, release the retaining clip on the bottom end of the graphics card. Sometimes it helps to press with light pressure on the card to help release the clip when you’re pressing down on the clip. Now pull the old graphics card straight up and out.

On my new RTX card, I’ll take off the protective pin cover and carefully line up the connector. To install the new graphics card, press down with light pressure until you hear a small click from the retaining clip. Make sure this clip is engaged before continuing. Then use the Philips screws removed earlier to lock in the card.

Once the graphics card is all secured, I’ll connect the power cables. And these will just slip on really easily. My old card only needed the 8 pin plug but this GeForce RTX card needs both the 8 and 6 pin cables. Now the installation is complete!

At this point plug everything back into the computer and power it up. The last step is to go to the manufacturer’s website to download and install drivers so the graphics card is working properly.

I upgraded to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super mainly so I could check out the enhanced graphics in Minecraft Windows 10 Beta. But soon I’ll be checking out more games that can utilize this card sometime in the future.
