De Telegraaf reports that the Gunners have struck a verbal agreement on a five-year contract, which will see Timber earn €8 million per season – double his current deal at Ajax.

The clubs are close to finalising the transfer fee, which could be around €45m.

The north Londoners have been working intensely on the deal after identifying the Netherlands international as their top defensive target.

The 22-year-old had been on Liverpool and Manchester United’s radar after expressing his desire to leave his current employers for the next step in his career.

However, the Gunners have won the race, with manager Mikel Arteta playing an instrumental role in getting the green light from the young defender.

After progressing through the youth ranks at Ajax, Timber quickly became a prominent fixture for the first team, having made 121 appearances across all competitions.

His impressive form also earned him a spot in the last year’s World Cup in Qatar, where he featured in four games before Orjanje’s defeat to eventual champions Argentina in the round of 16.

Considered one of the best young talents in Europe, Timber is an excellent ball-playing centre-back and also equally good defensively.

He is adept at playing as a right-back, making him a great addition for Arsenal.

The Gunners have also reportedly wrapped up the signing of Kai Havertz from rivals Chelsea in a deal worth £65m.

They are prioritising a move for West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice but are involved in a transfer tussle with Manchester City for the Three Lions star.
