Domaine de Chevalier. L´Esprit de Chevalier 2009 #098

Domaine de Chevalier is the name of a French winery located in the appellation Pessac-Léognan. As part of the important Graves wine region, Pessac-Léognan is one of the most famous wine regions in France. The flagship of the winery are the exquisite red and white wines.

Domaine de Chevalier is often referred to by its owner as a secret garden, because it is located in the heart of a lush forest landscape. Many winelovers even claim that the Domaine de Chevalier wines are the best what Bordeaux has to offer. The property, whose vineyards and magnificent buildings date back to the 18th century, is located south of the famous wine town of Bordeaux. Unlike other wineries, the estate is not called Château, but Domaine – a name difference that remains in the memory. After Jean Ricard founded the estate in 1865, his son-in-law Gabriel Beaumartin and Claude Ricard, a descendant of the Ricard family, continued the business before the Bernard family acquired the estate in 1983. Since then, the vineyards have increased many times, so the winery measures over 80 hectares today – that´s not small.

Soils and climatic conditions seem to harmonize perfectly in the Graves winegrowing region. Countless pebbles, which serve as optimal heat storage, characterize the gravelly soils. In this way, the grapes can develop an intense fruit sweetness, which benefits the taste of the wines. In addition, the vineyard is shielded from all sides by dense forests that protect the vines from wind, cold and extreme temperature fluctuations.

The planting of young vines led to the creation of both a red and white second wine called Esprit de Chevalier. These wines were basically mad from wines which don´t have quite the structure and focus of the grand vin as well as wine made from young vines.
