Technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate, and with it comes both convenience and danger. One area of concern is AI voice generation, which has the potential to be used for malicious purposes. AI voice generation is a technology that allows machines to produce speech that sounds like it has been spoken by a human being. While this technology has several practical applications, such as providing natural-sounding voiceovers for videos, it also presents a significant risk in terms of security. In a recent experiment, a writer for vice.com used an AI-generated voice to bypass security and access his bank account.
Please say, my voice is my password. My voice is my password. Thank you, hear a balance. To achieve this, he used a free service from Eleven Labs, an AI voice generation company. Recorded five minutes of speech and uploaded it to Eleven Labs. All I had to do was record five minutes of high-quality audio, and I just used this mic that I’m using right now. After making some adjustments, such as having the AI read a longer body of text for a more natural cadence, the generated audio outmaneuvered Lloyd’s security. Multiple banks use voice authentication to speed up logins over the phone. While some banks claim that voice identification is comparable to a fingerprint, this experiment demonstrates that voice-based biometric security does not offer perfect protection.
